The Jardin des Plantes is a park and a Botanical Garden located in the fifth arrondissement of Paris.

The Jardin des Plantes is a park and a Botanical Garden located in the fifth arrondissement of Paris. Based on the decision of King Louis XIII, at the insistence of his doctor Guy de la Brosse, it opened to the public in 1640 after five years of work. Called the Royal Garden of Medicinal Plants, it is intended for the training of Doctors and Apothecaries.

Visiting the Jardin des Plantes means discovering plants by the thousands with its 8,500 species and varieties, including 2,000 trees with remarkable trees planted by naturalists since the 17th century, 2,500 shrubs, 8,500 herbaceous plants, 2,000 plants greenhouses and 80,000 seasonal plants. It is also a garden with specialized gardens such as: the garden of resource plants, the school of botany, the ecological garden, the garden of roses and rocks, the garden of peonies, the garden of bees and birds, the garden of irises and perennials and the alpine garden which brings together medium and high altitude plants from France and around the world.

This Botanical Garden is an extraordinary and varied place with:

  • the Grandes Serres, a set of four greenhouses for the conservation of exotic plants brought back from trips by naturalists
  • the Galerie de l’Evolution, with its parade of stuffed animals
  • the Menagerie or Zoo of the Jardin des Plantes, which with its many animal species, ensures their preservation
  • the Belvédère du Labyrinthe, a mound traversed by a spiral path with the Buffon Gloriette at the end, an iron and bronze building four meters in diameter
  • the Gallery of Mineralogy and Geology, exhibits prestigious samples of rocks, minerals, gems, crystals, meteorites …

A stroll in the Jardin des Plantes, with its twenty-four hectares, is a journey through plant diversity through the paths devoted to nature. It is a French-style garden with square or tile flower beds.

Traditionally, the Jardin des Plantes is open to the public from sunrise to sunset!
