Moon Festival 2021

The second most important holiday after the Chinese New Year.

This year, China and many countries in Southeast Asia are celebrating the “Moon Festival” or “Mid-Autumn Festival” on September 21st.

The second most important holiday after the Chinese New Year, it traditionally falls on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese lunar calendar. This custom dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

That day, families get together around a good meal and share the “Moon Cake”. After the meal, they go for a walk to admire the moon and make offerings to it. The children carry lanterns which they fly. However, practices are different depending on the region.

Traditions and rites

The tradition of offerings dates back to the Zhou dynasty (1046 – 256 BC). Emperors regularly practiced these devotions at the Altar of the Moon. In Beijing, the emperors of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties used it. Gradually, this tradition became part of popular folklore to take place with the family. Nowadays, it is practiced in certain rural areas or in tourist sites.

According to the rite, 2 deacons walked slowly and placed themselves on either side of the table, followed by the celebrant (usually the oldest woman in the family) and the other participants (family members). The celebrant, kneeling, pulled 3 lighted incense sticks, made several wishes before placing them in the incense holder. The action was repeated 3 times. The celebrant poured a cup of wine in front of the offerings and said prayers invoking the moon. The prayer papers were then burned with moonlight papers (painted incense papers of the palace and the moon goddess). Finally, all participants genuflected three times before burning incense, making wishes and worshiping the moon one after the other.

What do we eat for the “Festival of the Moon”?

Apart from moon cakes, round shaped fruits like watermelon or pumpkin are common. According to legend, watermelon seeds promote fertility. The pumpkin promotes good health. Pumpkin patties replaced moon cake for those who couldn’t make it.

Culinary traditions vary from region to region. We find these dishes on the table during the festive evening:

  • Steamed hairy crab or mitten crab, often made with ginger and vinegar and served with soy sauce.
  • The buffalo nut or water caltrops because they look like little bats, an animal believed to bring good luck in China. They are usually simply boiled and eaten as a snack.
  • Taro, purple sweet potato, usually boiled or steamed. It is believed to bring good luck and ward off misfortune.
  • River snails, a tradition from Guangzhou. They are eaten cooked with strong herbs to counteract the pungent odor. In Chinese medicine, eating river snails is believed to benefit eyesight.
  • Duck. Each region has its own way of preparing it: in Fujian it is cooked with taro, in Jiangsu it is cooked and salted with osmanthus, while in Sichuan smoked duck is brown and salted, and Nanjing duck has crispy skin and tender flesh.
  • Lotus roots, steamed and served with sticky rice, sautéed vegetables and honey.
  • Osmanthus wine, drinking wine infused with this flower is a tradition, osmanthus flower is used as an ingredient or garnish in dishes.

The offerings

During ceremonies, most of the offerings are edible and round in appearance. “Moon cakes” but also watermelons cut in the shape of a lotus, grapes, boiled green soybeans, oranges and wine, are among them. The table is placed in front of an incense holder surrounded by red candles, in the light of the moon. In case of cloudy or rainy weather, it is placed in its main direction.
Moon cake is a traditional Chinese pastry. It is made from wheat flour and sweet fillings, such as powders of sweet lotus seeds or red bean or fruit. The moon cake is a symbol of family reunion. It is traditionally cut into pieces equal to the number of members in the family.

Printre muzicienii francezi s-au numărat pianistul francez Jean-François Zygel, percuționistul francez Joël Grare, harpistul elvețian Park Stickney, harpistul laser francez Time Composer.
