The history of the Cirque d’Hiver

The Bouglione circus is the only one to perform in a fixed circus in Paris. It is located in the 11th
district of the capital at 110 rue Amelot, between the Republic and Bastille, tour under a marquee.

The Duc de Morny, half-brother of Prince Louis-Napoleon, is at the origin of the construction of the
Circus d’Hiver which was created in December 1852 according to the idea of the architect Jacques
Hiltorf. It’s only 7 years later that the first flying trapeze number appeared thanks to Jules Léotard,
said “the artist flying”.
At the fall of the Second Empire, the Cirque Napoléon became Cirque National and then Cirque
d’Hiver in 1873. In 1907, Pathé takes over the premises transformed into a “Temple of Art
Nouveau”.

The first shows of the Bouglione Brothers, stage wild animals. After the success of the show
on Buffalo Bill, the renovation and construction of a swimming pool under the track by Gaston
Desprez, this the latter went bankrupt and sold the circus to the 4 Bouglione brothers in 1934. They
created 3 shows and go on tour. Until 1955.

From there, we witness an internationalization, the film “Trapeze” is shot and the photographer
Richard Avedon chooses the circus as a medium. In addition, the program “La piste aux étoiles”
presented by Roger Lanzac moved to the Cirque d’Hiver until 1978.

Since 1999, the new generation has taken up the torch and created new shows. Who
garnered great success.

The Bouglione family

In the 19th century, the son of an Italian draper, Scipion Bouglioni (francized Bouglione) met
Sonia, a young gypsy, tamer of wild animals. Together, they go to France and present
fairground menageries. A century later, the grandsons transform the menagerie into a circus
which they call “Circus of the 4 Bouglione brothers”. Thanks to the eldest Alexandre who created
the show “Stade Circus Buffalo Bill”, the name of Bouglione becomes essential. on the roads during
tours.

The museum

Cirque Bouglione has many secrets, you can discover them during a guided tour of the
places and exploring its museum. The oldest circus in the world brings out the art of
circus show, recognized since 1978.

The circus museum is hidden in Joseph Bouglione’s office. We discover there
rare pieces, sculptures, paintings, trinkets. Sole holder of the key, his grandson
Francesco who, like his grandfather, collects 19th century bronzes and paintings on the
circus.

In the old fodder reserve of the menagerie, is the private museum of the cousin of
Francesco, Louis-Sampion. We discover on 180 m², posters, models, costumes,
wigs, photographs and documents related to the Bouglione family and other families
of circus. The collection began thanks to his father Emilien and there are all kinds of treasures
like decorations of the track to the stars, the vestiges of an old cage with the lions of the circus
Médrano,…. Other memories are kept in Seine et Marne and in Cher. The idea would be to
create a great museum.
