The 2021 Jousting Season is launched at the Cadre Royal in Sète

It was the juniors who opened the start of the games on June 23.

The Juniors launched the 2021 season. The Jousts reflect the soul of the Sétois, their folklore and their traditions.

Traditionally, tournaments are preceded by a parade of jousters, all dressed in white and wearing a boater, accompanied by traditional music where the oboe and drum take center stage.

With more than 350 years of existence, this traditional festival to the glory of Louis XIV, founder of the city, and Languedoc nautical contests. The Cadre Royal is the portion of the canal delimited by two bridges, the Civette bridge and the Savonnerie bridge.

A first pass of honor opens the tournament. The jousters present their spears and shake hands when the boats cross. Then the two men, perched on the tintaine of the boats, their breasts protected by the bulwark, try to fall into the water when the boats pass each other, with a wooden spear with a shoed end.

Fanfares based in the stands “heat up” the atmosphere and greet the victorious jousters and the spectacular passes with loud bangs of brass and bass drums.

The games will take place from Wednesday June 23 to Sunday August 29, 2021.
